In his fourth year of college at Texas Christian University (TCU), Griffin took up part-time work as a dealer for a private poker room in Arlington, Texas. There he would deal five to six hours a night, squeezing in time for his own game before or after a shift. As Gavin played more, he won more.

Eventually, the lure of the cards became stronger than the call of the text books, and after four years at TCU, Griffin quit to become a pro player. He honed his skills online, where he became a true professional.

Starting out as an internet poker player, he successfully made the transition to live poker, and broke the record of the youngest person ever to win a World Series of Poker title in 2004, winning a $3,000 Pot Limit hold'em event.

In 2007, he won the Grand Final of the European Poker Tour in Monte Carlo, after qualifying via a $240 online satellite tournament on PokerStars.com

His victory paid him €1,825,010 ($2,434,061) which pushed him to the top of the all-time European Poker Tour winnings list.

In 2008, Griffin won the Borgata Winter Open, his first World Poker Tour title. With the win, he is the only player to have won a WSOP bracelet, an EPT event, and a WPT event. The honor and prestige that goes along with being poker’s only Triple Crown winner in history is unprecedented.

As of 2008, his total live tournament winnings exceed $4,500,000.

When Gavin is not raising at the tables, he’s active in raising awareness of breast cancer. When Gavin won the EPT Monte Carlo Grand Final, he won it wearing pink hair that he dyed that color in honor of Brest Cancer Awareness, proving he is a poker player with a cause. He credits much of his success to the support of his girlfriend, Kristen Roberts, who was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 20.
